Christmas is 'Canceled' in Bethlehem
by Stephen Farrell in Bethlehem

CHRISTMAS is canceled in the streets, if not the churches, of Bethlehem.
As Israel announced that its troops would remain on the streets of Christ’s birthplace and that Yassir Arafat would be barred from attending celebrations, church and civic leaders announced that festivities would be kept to a minimum. The 25ft Christmas tree in the grounds of Manger Square would remain unadorned and the £130,000 display of street lights unlit.

Hanna Nasser, the Mayor of Bethlehem, said that the decision had been simple: there was no stomach for festivities in a town whose 30,000 Palestinian inhabitants have nothing to spend, little to eat and are forced to stay in their homes for days at a time.

Indeed, Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday" asked House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi no fewer than four times for her "plan to solve [Social Security's] long-term solvency" problem, which Mrs. Pelosi freely acknowledged. "The plan for solvency," Mrs. Pelosi finally replied, "is to stop robbing Social Security of its money for other purposes. The plan is to return the money back to the trust fund."

By Steve Herman, Tokyo

Although they have difficulty pronouncing his family name, nearly everyone in Japan knows his face. Arnold Schwarzenegger's action movies and television commercials for noodles and beer have made him a celebrity here for years.

Now he is a hawking a new product - the state of California.

Mr. Schwarzenegger is leading a four-day, 57-member trade delegation to Japan, which kicked off with a buffet of California food and wine.

"Come to California. I invite all of you to California and I can guarantee you that you will fall in love with our great state," he said. " And before you go back home you will be saying 'I'll be back.'"
